El Dorado Woman's Club

Posted on: 2009-07-21
The El Dorado Woman's Club was organized in 1963, when homes were first being built by S&S in the El Dorado Park Estates neighborhood. Annie Grinham-Russon, who is a current member, was instrumental in forming the club as a way of helping the neighbors become acquainted with each other, and to do good work in the community as well. Betty Brown-Olague was the founding President. El Dorado Woman's Club became a Federated club in 1964, which means we are a club within the international General Federation of Women's Clubs. Over the years the club has raised money to support the community of Long Beach by having home tours, bake sales, garage sales, boutiques, opportunity ticket sales, teas and luncheons, bridge parties, bunko parties, and product sales. We do not have one specific charitable organization to which we regularly donate funds, but in the past have given to Newcomb School for the library and computer rooms, El Dorado Library for the purchase of books, Veterans Hospital, Project Achieve, Child Net, Precious Life Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, Pools for the Handicapped, Long Beach Day Nursery, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Bethune School, and provided equipment for Lilly Park in the neighborhood,to name a few. Every year we also give 2 Nursing Scholarships at Long Beach City College and a Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership scholarship for a Millikan Sophomore. The club does very little 'hands on' volunteering with the exception of Veteran's Hospital. Our current membership is 70 very caring women, not all of whom live in El Dorado Park Estates, as membership is open to all.

We meet monthly at The Grand on the 3rd Monday of the month (dark in June, July and August), social hour at 10:30, meeting at 11:00, followed by lunch at 12 noon. After lunch we usually have a speaker or program on a timely subject. Reservations may be made by contacting Lois LLes, 598-4920. We welcome new members and returning former members!
